Attraction and our senses.

We know from research and from our own experiences that attractiveness plays a central role in non-verbal communication.

Often, I read about the signs of attraction between females and males, and the majority of my reading has been focused on unspoken yet visual signs that an individual may demonstrate when interacting in everyday human communication.

I am referring to behavioural cues, such as mirroring behaviour and eye contact. Mirroring refers to where people unconsciously mimic each other’s action’s, gestures or reactions.

Eye contact also communicates intentionality. Maintaining eye contact during a conversation is how individuals connect on a deeper level. This does vary depending on cultural experiences.

Attractiveness is multi-modal.

Olfactory senses, our sense of smell, and our auditory senses, our hearing. Both play a significant role in biological attraction.

The amount of information we gain from a person based solely on their scent and voice is quite broad.

Humans use scent to assess sex, personality, dominance, fertility levels, diet, age, genetic compatibility, and overall health status.

We also sense out our kin via body odour (Westfield et al., 2003; Ferdenzi et al., 2010)
