Technology has changed the way we communicate on a global scale. Many ways it brought many positive initiatives, we can communicate so a large level instantly. We no longer wait like we used to. Most things are online, and often, you are directed back to the internet to troubleshoot. AI is changing the way we think and interact with our own computers, basically another form of attachment, I believe. I am guilty of this myself; the chat bot does make some things easier.

Now, there is no rule book for social etiquette as far as I know, and one size will never fit all, but here are some of the things I noticed when it comes to new age communication. “Netiquette” being the term used to describe online social norms.

Replying; in a social context.

The majority of our communication in a social context is done through social media platforms, Facebook being one of the oldest, longest standing avenues of communication and connection. Now, it has now branched into a multitude of arenas everywhere as pleases the individual.

Yet replying, on a messaging basis, seems to have an unspoken code.

1: Adding humour

We often add haha or lol in our messages even if it’s not in a humorous conversation. People tend to do this to lighten what is being said or to remove a sense of bluntness from a message.

Messages are often taken out of context due to individual perception. In adding the sense of jovial text, it tends to soften the conversation.

2: Being left on read.

Now everyone responds
